Founded in 1348 by King Edward III as "society, companionship and college of knights' The Most Noble Order of the Garter is the oldest and highest order of chivalry the United Kingdom. Admission is restricted to no more than 24 members, whose selection is the sole responsibility of the sovereign of the United Kingdom who is the head of the Order.
Given the exclusivity of the Order, it is given only to individuals who have distinguished themselves through their outstanding achievements in serving the United Kingdom. The men are known as Knight Companion , women Lady Companion . As the name suggests, the emblem of the Order is a garter that overcomes the motto Honi soit qui mal y pense ( Both reviled those who think evil ). The Garter is worn by members of the Order during formal occasions. The motto Honi soit qui mal y pense is also written on the figurehead of the flagship Victory, star of the Battle of Trafalgar under the command of Horatio Nelson . There are several legends about the origin of the name, the most commonly heard during a dance a corte, una Contessa di Salisbury perse una giarrettiera.

- hat, black velvet with a white feather of ostrich and black heron .
