The Order of the Garter

Founded in 1348 by King Edward III as "society, companionship and college of knights' The Most Noble Order of the Garter is the oldest and highest order of chivalry the United Kingdom. Admission is restricted to no more than 24 members, whose selection is the sole responsibility of the sovereign of the United Kingdom who is the head of the Order.

Given the exclusivity of the Order, it is given only to individuals who have distinguished themselves through their outstanding achievements in serving the United Kingdom. The chapel is the Officer of the Order of St. George at Windsor Castle. Since 1948, the initiative of George VI, the ceremony has become an annual religious celebration, and takes place in June. It is usually held by the Prelate.
